This is a picture of Kerckhoff Hall in early December, 2017, right after the fire near the Getty Center. The air condition around UCLA was affected, and the smoke can be seen near the horizon.

3rd Place "Untitled (Desert Fabrication)" by Caroline Carr ’09

While studying Photography at the School of the Arts and Architecture I started incorporating the technique of digitally removing elements in my work. This was an attempt to refocus the eye and see how perception changed when elements were manipulated or removed. This technique launched a series that I started at UCLA and am still working on today.

The serie "90291" I present is a sort of wandering in Venice beach at night, a roaming in my own neighborhood, in the intimacy of people that surrounds me. This poetic and social epic wants to depict dreams and doubts of a Californian generation (persons in their 30's-40's), led by an artistic and philosophical alternative way of thinking, and torn between dreams and debauch, desire of success and addictions. This sort of "fresco" takes place in darken places with special lights and colors, to suggest the intimate moods, the deep conflicts of the people I've met. In this psychedelic atmosphere, where drugs, alcohol and dreams could lead to a surrealist vision: every object could become a metaphor of our mindset (American flag, mirror, scarf, cross...).

"After the End of School" by Hyegyoung Choo

"After the End of School" by Hyegyoung Choo

College is a place where we spend the best years of our life. The emotions that you encounter when you visit your school after graduation is something beyond words. I actually walked around the campus a few times after I graduated, and it was special to photograph the campus. The quiet campus after the school year, beautiful Los Angeles's summer sunset light, and historical Romanesque architectures buildings: these things brought nostalgia to me and it instilled with numerous emotions. You do not see any of your friends or people in my photographs, but when you look at these favorite hangout places, they help you bring many precious memories of you and your friends with all those tears and smiles you shared.

Bruin in Blue By Johan - Flat, Modern, 5 color vector artwork

"Bruin in Blue" by Johan Cristobal

BRUIN in Blue uses American Sign Language (ASL) to spell B R U I N. It uses a minimalistic design to highlight the five fingers involved in the ASL alphabet. I made the design in hopes of sparking an interest in learning at least the ASL alphabet in order to lessen the barriers between the Hearing and Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities.

"Mighty Bruin" by Maggie Shi

"Mighty Bruin" by Maggie Shi

One of the biggest tragedies I noticed at UCLA was that most students didn't know the words to our Alma mater, despite the tune being one of the most recognizable melodies on campus. I created this piece in an effort to make it easier for students to learn these lyrics in a unique way.

"Dreamer, Optimist" by Natasha Ann Lum

"Dreamer, Optimist" by Natasha Ann Lum

"Dreamer, Optimist" is a representation of the spirit of every Bruin through the depiction of a hot-air balloon navigating through a cloud of fog. The simple yet detailed sketch of the hot-air balloon symbolizes the realization of raw and creative imagination, fueled by burning passion, while the introduction of pastel blue and yellow to the supposedly desolate fog clouds describes optimism in adversity. Lastly, the presence of blank space is meant to illustrate the endless possibilities and ideas which await future realization. Screen reader support enabled. "Expired Film; Timeless Hall" by Qingyi Wang

Royce Hall, as one of the few original buildings of UCLA, witnessed a tremendous amount of history and saw countless people achieve their dreams through the campus it oversaw. Artistically, its Italian architectural style and asymmetry gave the building a uniquely elegant look. So I set out with a film camera to capture the building's timeless presence, and to remind myself that although we pass by this building far too many times, we should not take it for granted.
